GI issues are so incredibly common with symptomati

GI issues are so incredibly common with symptomatic hypermobility conditions such as EDS/HSD.

We need more research to determine the exact prevalence, but some small studies have found as many as 87% of those with hEDS struggle with GI symptoms.

In fact, for me @dr.melissakoehl.pt this was the area I struggled the hardest with in my health journey and is why I’m so excited to collaborate with Dr. Susan Cucchiara, ND @dr.susanc on this post!

Working with skilled providers that understand the complexity of connective tissue disorders AND functional GI conditions can be so incredibly helpful.

However, access to these people isn’t always easy. But thankfully there are several self care strategies we can do to best support our digestion.

Gut motility, including the clean up waves of the migrating motor complex (MMC) is often impaired in EDS/HSD and if I had known that years ago it would have been a huge game changer!

For example ginger lemon tea is one of my all time favorite drinks, and using ginger in food, juices, smoothies etc can be one simple way to help support that gut motility.

I know I know...it’s healthy “because it has a

I know I know...it’s healthy “because it has avocado!” and sometimes other fancy toppings.

BUT, you are not eating it with PROTEIN.

And is 2 eggs enough protein? Nope!

Protein helps stabilize your blood sugar, and first thing in the morning, having a piece of bread which is a carb with a healthy fat may seen healthy, but it is missing PROTEIN.

You want that protein in the morning especially so you do not have blood sugar highs and lows through the day, which has a direct impact on your mood, hormones, ability to lose weight, etc.

I asked to add 2 poached eggs to at least get 12 grams of protein (6 grams per egg) and then asked for a protein smoothie on the side to fill in the rest of the protein needs. You can also add an organic breakfast meat to add more protein.

You will stay FULLER and SATISFIED much longer if you add protein! No need for constant snacks then or sugar cravings.

I usually try to aim for around 30 grams, give or take, and have my patients do the same.

Also, ask for gluten free bread when you can! Gluten can cause leaky gut, brain fog, fatigue and cause digestive upset, and mess with your mood.
